Society generates millions of tons of sludges (both domestic and industrial) each year. Combatting the harmful environmental and public health effects of treating and disposing of waste sludges is reminiscent of the vintage (and annoying) 1970s Wisk “Ring Around the Collar” TV commercial targeting pesky shirt collar stains. The TV commercial, as applied to waste residuals, would go something like this: “Those dirty sludges, you try landfilling them, and burning them, but you still come out with something awful!” (Something far worse than “Ring Around the Collar.”)

The St. Louis Law Journal, BAMSL’s bi-monthly publication, seeks proposals from members interested in serving as Editor-in-Chief of its scholarly section. This voluntary role involves selecting topics and authors, editing content, and collaborating with BAMSL staff and the Communications Committee to produce four to six issues annually. Proposals should showcase a creative vision for modernization, including digital and alternative platforms to enhance accessibility and engagement.

Amidst the ever-shifting landscape of environmental law, few topics are as ubiquitous (or controversial) as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”). The range of challenges are not limited to one regulatory scheme. There are implications for manufacturers reporting under the Toxic Substances Control Act; limits on the discharge of PFAS in wastewater; limits on PFAS in drinking water; prohibitions on PFAS in products, especially those that come in contact with food; litigation for claims of contamination or health impacts; and so many more, driven by various agencies at both state and federal levels.
