We live and work in a world where things feel pretty dire. The old complaint that the news never shows the good in humanity doesn’t feel so much like a complaint as it does a reality. Life kicks us while we’re down every day with a new set of crises—personal, professional, and humanitarian—and we are expected to go about our daily routines unbothered by the utter devastation happening around us. We cannot help but become cynics. If you can’t tell that I’ve fallen prey to that cynicism, re-read the first paragraph of this article.
