Katie is a trained first responder, working as a corrections officer in St. Louis County for a little over 6 years. She needed a stable job with good benefits to support her family. The job was exceptionally dangerous and exhausting. It was during her time there that Katie saw the worst that people can do to each other, how they are treated. It was difficult for her to reconcile her job to keep people in jail, while recognizing many inmates don’t belong there. BAMSL has changed dramatically in the last 35 years. When I joined, we had two lunch clubs and a large staff. BAMSL has shrunk dramatically in staff size and the practice of law has changed with Zoom appearances in court and CLE over the internet. Frankly, I am happy to see that BAMSL has survived but as a voluntary bar it must continually improve and add value to the everyday life of an attorney.

Judge Carlisle finished her PhD in Philosophy of Judicial Studies in 2022 and is enjoying her life in ways that she was not able to before.
