On June 14, 2024, the Collector of Revenue and the City of St. Louis reached a settlement with the plaintiffs in Boles v. City of St. Louis, allowing persons who are nonresidents of the city of St. Louis to seek refunds for earnings tax paid on compensation for work performed or services rendered outside the City from 2020 through 2023.  The settlement agreement concluded more than three years of contentious litigation between the Collector’s office and taxpayers regarding the taxation of “remote work” performed for employers that have physical locations within the City.

In Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, the Supreme Court overruled its decision in Chevron USA v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. In doing so, the Court wiped away forty years of settled federal law and a pillar of the contemporary administrative state. Indeed, the Chevron case had been cited in over 18,000 cases. Loper Bright will likely trigger waves of litigation as regulated parties clash with federal administrative to determine the scope of the decision and its impacts on regulatory programs.

To ensure clients are protected, lawyers using generative artificial intelligence tools must fully consider their applicable ethical obligations, including their duties to provide competent legal representation, to protect client information, to communicate with clients, to supervise their employees and agents, to advance only meritorious claims and contentions, to ensure candor toward the tribunal, and to charge reasonable fees.
