Saint Louis Bar Foundation logo

Your support for the work of the St. Louis Bar Foundation is welcomed, needed and appreciated. Your generosity will be used to provide grants to deserving organizations whose mission is to provide greater access to the justice systems for those who might not be able to access it otherwise. It can also fund scholarships for deserving students who might not be able to afford educational advantages otherwise.

The St. Louis Bar Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, so when you give to the Foundation your gift becomes fully tax deductible. Online donations are quick and easy using our secure credit card transactions. We welcome donations of all sizes and payment plans – whether it's a one-time gift or a monthly contribution. You also have the option of specifying how you would like your contribution put to work; just click on a fund name below to learn more.

General Fund

Used at the discretion of the Foundation for operations, grants, and scholarship activities.

The Saint Louis Bar Foundation was founded in 1956 to be the charitable arm of The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. The Foundation was originally founded by a group of lawyers who made financial contributions for charitable purposes. In recognition of their monetary support, they were designated "Fellows” of the Foundation. Today, the Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, qualified to receive full tax-deductible donations. We actively engage in annual grants and other charitable activities to further the rule of law and the administration of justice.

Motion for Kids

Donations to Motion for Kids go to provide an annual Holiday Party for St. Louis area children in the foster care system, or those whose lives have been severely impacted by the criminal justice system. Annually, up to 3,000 children are served. The event is co-sponsored and organized by The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, Saint Louis Bar Foundation, Saint Louis University, Chaifetz Arena, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and Isaac Bruce Foundation.

Children are matched up with sponsors from the St. Louis legal community (lawyers, judges, paralegals, office administrators, law students and legal secretaries). Each sponsor is asked to purchase and wrap two gifts (totaling $30) chosen from the child’s wish list. Gifts are distributed during the party, to which the children and their families are invited. Holiday Party activities include: Photos and autographs with sports figures and cheerleaders, arts & crafts stations, games, books, photos with Santa Claus, refreshments, and live entertainment.

Grants

The Saint Louis Bar Foundation awards grants for "innovative projects that address identifiable and unmet needs in the community.” The grant proposals from eligible non-profit organizations must, according to Foundation guidelines, address one or more of the following categories: The advancement of the philosophy of law; the promotion and/or improvement of the administration of justice; the promotion and/or maintenance of high standards for the judiciary and lawyers; and the promotion of the public’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the rule of law, the practice of law, the court system, and individuals’ rights and responsibilities under the law.

Scholarships

The Saint Louis Bar Foundation awards scholarships to students of law; and to promote the study of the law and research thereon, the diffusion or knowledge thereof, and the continuing education of lawyers.

Tributes & Memorials

Honor the extraordinary, celebrate the occasion and recognize the important people in your life with a charitable gift to the Saint Louis Bar Foundation. Tribute gifts are an easy way for you to support the Foundation’s grant making initiatives and make certain special family, friends and colleagues receive the recognition they deserve. Memorial gifts upon one’s passing are also a considerate way to commemorate a loved one or someone close to you.

Freedom Suits Memorial Project

From the time of the Louisiana Purchase until the Emancipation Proclamation 57 years later, approximately 400 slaves filed suits in Missouri Courts to demand their freedom, assisted by lawyers working without pay.

A memorial commemorating these brave St. Louis litigants and their attorneys is planned for the east plaza of the Civil Courts Building downtown. Fundraising from private sources will begin immediately, focusing on members of the legal community.

St. Louis City Gun Buy-Back Program

On December 8, 2017, BAMSL President Ed Dowd, of Dowd Bennett LLP, and BAMSL Executive Director Zoe Linza joined St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and the Hon. Jimmie Edwards, now the city’s Director of Public Safety, at a press conference at St. Louis City Hall to announce details about the program. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will collect guns from individuals as a way to get them off the street. Anyone who turns in a gun will receive financial reimbursement for guns that are turned in, with no questions asked from the police.

The City of St. Louis approached BAMSL leadership about assistance with funding this project that is designed to improve the community. Individual lawyers, law firms and anyone else affiliated with BAMSL or the community in general who wishes to donate to this community outreach effort may do so via the Saint Louis Bar Foundation.
