This weekend, rent and mortgage payments will be due, just as unemployment benefits and remaining federal and local eviction protections expire. Jobs remain scarce and financial assistance dwindles, and families, who were able to make ends meet pre-COVID, are now unable to pay rent and put food on the table.

Although members of the legal community were disturbed by the photos and video showing two attorneys from the St. Louis area brandishing weapons over the weekend, The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) is a voluntary bar and neither of the depicted lawyers belong to our organization.

Americans are united in their shock and sadness following the tragic death of George Floyd. As a legal organization committed first and foremost to the administration of equal justice, The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) condemns tactics that violate the constitutional rights of American citizens and acknowledges a nationwide need for dialogue and change around the subject of race and human relations. BAMSL pledges our continued support for the African American and minority communities in the St. Louis region.

After the state of Missouri and City of St. Louis announced stay-at-home orders in mid-March, the staff of The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) grabbed paper and digital files we thought we needed to sustain us working at home for a couple of weeks — and worked through the challenges of learning how to connect to the BAMSL server remotely.

The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) kicked off its 2020-21 bar year on Fri., May 1 a little bit differently than previous years. BAMSL's 2020-21 Board of Governors and Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Executive Board were sworn in virtually via Zoom at noon on May 1, the same day that Law Day annually is commemorated nationally.

Many of you are seeking ways to assist those in our community who are in desperate need of food right now. Our St. Louis Attorneys Against Hunger Committee has some opportunities for you to donate food or help fund local efforts to feed area schoolchildren and their families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. There also are opportunities to volunteer your time — the organizations are providing masks and gloves for your safety.

We are being called to help in this time of crisis. Local health care professionals working in hospitals and otherwise on the front lines against coronavirus have been reaching out to BAMSL asking for assistance with their estate planning. BAMSL President Sara Neill created a special task force to respond to this plea, and I write as one of the chairs of that task force.
