Women in the Legal Profession (WILP) Section | The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis

Women in the Legal Profession

Established in 1980 as a committee, the mission of the Women in the Legal Profession Section (WILP) is to promote and enhance women in the legal field professionally, personally, and within their community.  WILP provides members with the opportunity to connect and interact with other female legal professionals, thus offering support, growth, and synergy.

Membership in WILP is free for all BAMSL members. Currently, there are over 100 section members. However, membership is not automatic. Aren't sure if you're a member? Would you like to become one? Contact Shannan Hall, BAMSL staff member for WILP, at or (314) 421-4134. You can also sign up for any BAMSL Commitee or Section through your online member profile. We'd love for you to join us and help make WILP an even stronger force in the legal community!

WILP Scholarships

The Women in Legal Profession (WILP) Section is offers scholarships to law students who have committed to an internship (paid or unpaid) at a non-profit or other qualified organization in the St. Louis metropolitan area for a minimum of eight weeks each summer. Preference is given to applicants who, as part of their internship, will address legal issues that affect women, including internships that involve domestic violence, gender fairness, child custody and similar issues.

Each year when applications are received, the decision is difficult as all applicants are standouts!  The scholarship recipient for 2017 is Emilee Bramstedt.

The deadline to submit the Scholarship Application and the required documentation is announced each year in the weekly e-Newsletter and on this web page.

Charity Suit Drive

Our annual suit drive is always a huge success.  We receive an enormous number of gently-used men’s and women’s suits and other professional clothing which are then donated to Midwest Dress for Success to assist men and women who are seeking employment but might not have the funds necessary to purchase professional clothing.

These items will directly benefit various local clients of Midwest Dress for Success as well as students involved with the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition who may not have the resources to purchase clothing for the competition.

Our thanks go out to the many firm members that donate to this worthy cause.

New Admittee Reception

The WILP annual reception to welcome all newly admitted women attorneys is held in November of each year and allows the “newbies” to meet and mingle with other women of the profession as well as judges who attend the event and agree to a lunch match with a new admittee.  The reception is free to all new ladies of the bar and a great way to begin networking!

Each year, WILP provides a “Book Corner” to give books to kids attending the party.  It’s always great to see the smiling face of a child who is excited to receive a book they can take home with them and read whenever they desire.  The Book Corner for 2017 saw its first Book Drive for books to the give to the children as well as its first “Story Time” for the kids (and grown-ups) who come by.

Mentoring Program

WILP’s Mentoring Program provides a great opportunity for new bar members to consult and to seek guidance from experienced members of the bar. To ensure that mentees benefit as much as possible from the Mentoring Program, WILP matches mentees and mentors based on their shared interests and practice areas. Once WILP has paired the mentee and mentor, the mentee and mentor can choose how to structure their relationship. To become a mentee or a mentor, please contact the committee chair.

Lunching For Fun

WILP members get together for lunch to discuss issues, upcoming BAMSL events, or anything else on their minds at various St. Louis eateries quarterly.  Invitations are sent along to all members of the Section and the lunches are a great opportunity to get better acquainted with each other and learn from others’ experiences in the field.
