Those in the legal industry already know that the 6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution grants criminal defendants the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. The uncertainty at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020 made that guarantee extremely challenging for our court system. However, as demonstrated here, the judiciary rose to the challenge and ensured that the courts remained open, albeit in a very different format, to ensure that citizens were able to have their day in court (albeit often without even stepping foot into the courthouse).

We asked judges from our region to share their experiences of keeping the judicial system functioning during the pandemic, and asked them to explain how they are proceeding now that the country works to return to some semblance of normalcy.
