Welcome to BAMSL Assist
Your first question may be, “What can I ask for help with?” The answer may sound trite, but there is no request too large or too small. Here are some examples of the types of assistance requests that have been made before:
- donations of blood for someone involved in an accident or awaiting surgery.
- requests for donations of frequent flyer miles for someone who needs to travel on an emergency basis, but does not have the funds.
- someone moving offices may have books or furniture they are willing to donate to a young attorney starting out as a solo practitioner.
- someone with a personal emergency that requires them to move quickly and they need help packing.
These are all examples of situations that have been handled successfully by this type of email networking program. Some requests may seem small, but to the person needing the “assist,” it may be a monumental need.
The grandest example of a request, made to another bar association’s similar program, happened during the World Cup in South Africa. A member had family travelling in South Africa. Tragically, their vehicle was struck by a drunk driver. One of the passengers was killed and the other suffered serious injuries and was placed in intensive care in a South African hospital. Through “Assist” list, their program was able to arrange a life flight team to go to South Africa and accompany the patient back home. This is proof that there is truly no request too big for this type of “networking” program.
How to get involved
Getting involved is very easy. All you need to do is provide your email address. Simply send your email address to firstname.lastname@example.org requesting to be placed on the list. Once we have your email address, all you need to do is keep your eye on your inbox for requests for assistance. If you can help, just respond as indicated in the email and go from there. If you cannot help, delete the message and wait for the next one. What a great way to get involved in helping others – often with very simple things, and sometimes with life-saving events!
Asking for help from the program is just as easy. All requests for assistance should be sent to email@example.com. Do not be shy. As already mentioned, there is truly no request too large or too small. When you need help, we are ready to help you in any way we can. In the request, you should indicate how you want to be contacted with offers of assistance. Again, you can remain anonymous if you prefer. We believe you will be amazed at the generosity and compassion of your legal community.
You can also help by getting the word out about BAMSL Assist to your colleagues. The more the merrier. Together we can create an extensive network that can be used to comfort and provide assistance to those among us who do not know where to turn in a time of need.
