Our speakers will analyze legal concepts in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, being performed this season by the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend the play in Shakespeare Glen following the CLE program on Friday, June 9 from 4:30 PM - 10:00 PM CT.
The panel (Professor Karen Petroski, Hon. William Gust, and Hon. Stanley J. Wallach) will discuss the law of the duel in Shakespeare’s time as it compares to modern day defenses of sudden provocation and self-defense in assault cases, credibility determinations regarding the play’s characters in the broader context of today’s evidence law, and the treatment of Malvolio’s perceived madness under Elizabethan law compared to current procedures for the involuntary civil commitment of the mentally ill.
