In U.S. patent practice, it is not uncommon for applicants to pursue protection for their invention in a series of related continuing applications containing the same or similar disclosure. Often, an applicant secures protection for a more narrowly defined embodiment of the invention in a first application, and then seeks claims of a broader or slightly different scope in one or more later‑filed applications claiming priority to the earlier filed application. The BAMSL Young Lawyers’ Division has focused on three primary goals. First and foremost is law student outreach. Law students are the largest cohort in YLD membership. Between SLU, WashU, Mizzou, and SIU Carbondale, there are over 2,000 law students in BAMSL YLD. Whether they know it or not, their free membership gives them access to any BAMSL event, providing them countless opportunities to feel welcomed into their new chosen field. From networking with law firm partners to schmoozing with judges, law students are provided with an intimate and up-close encounter with leading lawyers in our community. This access gives those involved law students a leg up when it comes to career growth and the necessary confidence to establish themselves as impactful members of the legal community.
