Founded in 1874 by some 100 members of the St. Louis bench and bar convened at the Old Courthouse, BAMSL now has over 6,000 members and a vast network of committees and sections. 
Yet its key purposes have remained constant:

  • To maintain high standards among practitioners of the law;
  • To provide high quality continuing legal and professional education;
  • To be watchful of the fair administration of justice; and
  • To promote social relations among its members.

Membership Categories and Dues

The dues to be paid by members are set forth below, and shall be assessed annually and payable
as of the beginning of the fiscal year, May 1.  Eligibility requirements for the Government and Public Sector Lawyer Reduced Dues are also set out following the dues chart:

Dues are prorated at one-half the annual fee if application is submitted after Nov. 1.

**Reduced Dues for Government and Public Sector Lawyers
Reduced dues are available to those who can certify they qualify as one or more of the following:
-- A full-time employee of any governmental unit
-- A full-time active service military lawyer
-- A full-time court personnel employee
-- A full-time judge
-- Any of the above on a part-time basis if this is one's only employment

*Reinstatement Fee: If your membership was terminated for nonpayment of dues, you will be assessed an extra fee of one-half of your current dues amount.

Membership dues include $12.00 for annual subscription to The St. Louis Bar Journal and $24.00 for annual subscription to the St. Louis Lawyer. Contributions or gifts to BAMSL are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. However, dues payments are deductible by members as an ordinary and necessary business expense and contributions to the St. Louis Bar Foundation, 501(c)(3) are deductible as charitable contributions.


Application Process

First . . . complete the appropriate application form.

Second . . . send the form, along with payment of the appropriate annual dues, to:

Third . . . notice of your application will be published in the St. Louis Lawyer.

Fourth . . . your application will be presented for approval to the BAMSL Executive Committee.

Fifth . . . you are notified of your application approval, issued a membership number and sent a packet of information including sign-up forms for Section and Committee memberships (no extra charge). The work of the Committees and Sections is the heart of the work of the Association itself. All members are encouraged to be active.
