Petitions to nominate candidates for BAMSL offices for the 2013 Bar Year may be filed at BAMSL offices, 555 Washington Avenue, Suite 100, between 8:30 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2013 and 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2013.
Nominations for the president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and five Board of Governor’s member-at-large positions (two year terms) positions are being accepted. For a sample petition, please contact Lucia Patterson at BAMSL at (314) 421-4134 or email@example.com.
Nominations of candidates to fill offices shall be made by not fewer than five, or more than 10, members in good standing. The candidate shall include with the petition one head and shoulders, black and white photograph and factual information under the following categories: current address; name of law firm or employer; law school and year graduated; offices held on the Board and years; Council, Division, Section, and Committee offices held and years, and any other law-related activities.
Voting shall be by secret electronic ballot for which a URL link will be provided via an emailed notice to all voting members. The signature of the respective voter on the electronic ballot shall be made in such manner as to preserve the secrecy of each ballot. The omission of the signature will invalidate the ballot. Not later than 20 days prior to the Annual Election Meeting, the secretary shall cause a URL link to the electronic ballot to be emailed to each member of the Association eligible to vote. Ballots to be counted must be cast prior to 5:00 p.m. on Election Day, Thursday, April 4, 2013. Candidates shall be listed on the ballot in the order in which their nominating petition is filed, except (i) the order for all filings on the first day of filing shall be listed in an order determined by a random drawing, (the first day is defined as 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and (ii) the order for all filings on the last day of filing shall be listed in an order determined by a random drawing.
In case of any office, the candidate, or if there is more than one to be elected, the candidates receiving the largest number of votes shall be declared elected. In the case of a tie vote, the members of the Association present at the Annual Meeting shall vote by secret written ballot and the candidate receiving the larger vote shall be declared the winner.
The Association shall not assist any candidate in publicizing candidacy for an office in the Association except as approved by the Executive Committee in 1985. Campaigning for candidates will not be permitted in the offices of BAMSL. Candidates for office may purchase the Association mailing list upon prepayment of one-half the commercial cost and two weeks’ notice.
The Annual meeting shall commence at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013. Winners will be declared by the president, after certification by the Executive Committee, at the Annual Meeting. The above rules also apply to the Young Lawyers’ Division. Nominations will be accepted for the YLD offices of chair-elect, vice chair, secretary, treasurer, and two member-at-large.
