St. Louis Bar Foundation
The St. Louis Bar Foundation was founded in 1956 to be the charitable arm of The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. It was originally founded by a group of lawyers who made financial contributions for charitable purposes. In recognition of their monetary support, they were designated “Fellows” of the Foundation. Today, the Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) charity, qualified to receive fully tax-deductible donations.
The founders soon developed a set of guidelines to further the more general goal of the Foundation. These are spelled out in the by-laws of the Foundation as:
-
To foster and maintain the honor and integrity of the profession of the law;
-
To study, improve and facilitate the administration of justice;
-
To promote suitable standards of legal education;
-
To cause to be published and to distribute addresses, reports, treatises and other literary works on legal subjects;
-
To acquire, preserve and exhibit rare books and documents, objects of art, and items of historical interest having legal significance or bearing on the administration of justice;
-
To grant scholarships to students of law; and
-
To promote the study of the law and research thereon, the diffusion of knowledge thereof, and the continuing education of lawyers.
You are invited to explore the various links on this page, where you will discover how the Foundation utilizes donated funds to support other groups in our community and their programs. These include programs which assist citizens in utilizing the law to solve problems, as well as youth education programs that demonstrate how the law operates and how it directly affects young people’s lives. We have encouraged young people to consider law as a career, and we grant direct scholarship assistance toward study at the law schools in our surrounding area. You will also find links that allow you to view those lawyers who contribute their time to the management of the Foundation by serving on its Board of Directors and to read about the programs currently receiving grants from the Foundation. Finally (and importantly), see how you can assist the Foundation financially and support these efforts.
